About Yasawa Islands

  • Island

Where it is

The Yasawa Islands are a chain of about twenty volcanic islands stretching north-west from Viti Levu in western Fiji.

History

Fijians have lived on these islands for centuries in small villages. William Bligh sailed through the group in 1789 after the mutiny on the Bounty, and the islands stayed quiet until small resorts and homestays, many run with village landowners, opened in recent decades.

People

Island life centres on Fijian villages that fish, farm and welcome guests with kava ceremonies, and many resort workers come from the neighbouring settlements.

Known for

  • White-sand beaches and clear lagoons
  • The limestone Sawa-i-Lau caves
  • Manta rays off Naviti
  • Village homestays

Did you know?

The 1980 film The Blue Lagoon was shot in the Yasawa group, giving its name to a lagoon here.
