Tarkarli is a beach village in the Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra, on the Konkan coast of the Arabian Sea near Malvan, where the Karli river meets the sea.
This coast belonged to the Maratha kingdom of Chhatrapati Shivaji, who built the sea fort of Sindhudurg on an island off Malvan in the 1660s to guard it. Tarkarli long remained a quiet fishing village, and its clear water and long beach now draw visitors.
Tarkarli's people speak Malvani and Marathi, and fishing has long been the village's main livelihood. Malvani cooking, rich with coconut, kokum and fresh fish, is famous across Maharashtra.
