Taipa is a former island in Macau, joined to the peninsula by bridges and to Coloane by reclaimed land.
Taipa was a quiet island of fishing and farming villages for centuries. Bridges linked it to the Macau Peninsula from the 1970s, and land reclamation later joined it to Coloane, creating the Cotai area. Its old village keeps narrow lanes, small temples and colonial-era houses.
Cantonese is spoken in Taipa, and the old village mixes Chinese temples with Portuguese buildings, reflecting Macau's blended culture.
Taipa and Coloane were once separate islands until land reclamation joined them in the late 20th century.
