Sucre is the constitutional capital of Bolivia, a city of whitewashed buildings in a highland valley at about 2,800 metres.
Founded by the Spanish in 1538 as La Plata, the city became a centre of colonial law, church and learning. Bolivian independence was declared here in 1825, and its colonial centre was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991.
Sucre's people speak Spanish and Quechua, and the city has a large student population thanks to one of the oldest universities in the Americas.
A limestone wall at Cal Orck'o on the edge of the city holds thousands of dinosaur footprints left in ancient mud.
