The Statue of Unity stands on Sadhu Bet, a rocky island in the Narmada river in the Narmada district of Gujarat, just downstream of the Sardar Sarovar Dam at Kevadia, between the Vindhya and Satpura ranges.
The statue honours Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, India's first deputy prime minister and home minister, who led the integration of the princely states into the Indian Union after independence. Built around a steel and concrete core clad in bronze, it was unveiled on 31 October 2018, Patel's birth anniversary.
The hills around the statue are home to Bhil and Tadvi Adivasi communities, who farm and gather forest produce, and Gujarati and Bhili dialects are spoken. Many families now also work in tourism around the statue and the dam.
At 182 m, the Statue of Unity is nearly twice the height of New York's Statue of Liberty measured with its pedestal.
