Sonamarg is a hill station in the Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir, India, about 80 km north-east of Srinagar on the Sindh River, below the Zojila pass on the road to Ladakh.
Sonamarg, meaning meadow of gold, was a halt on the old route from the Kashmir valley over Zojila towards Ladakh and Central Asia, and it remains the last town before the pass.
Sonamarg's people speak Kashmiri, and in summer Gujjar and Bakarwal herders bring their flocks up to its meadows, while local families run the ponies, sledges and guesthouses.
Sonamarg is a base for the trek to the Great Lakes of Kashmir, including Vishansar and Krishansar.
