Where it is

Sibiu is a historic city in southern Transylvania, in central Romania, with the Făgăraș Mountains rising to the south.

History

Sibiu was founded by Saxon settlers in the 12th century and, as Hermannstadt, became one of the most important Saxon towns in Transylvania. Its walls, guild towers and squares survive well. The city was a European Capital of Culture in 2007, which brought careful restoration of its old centre.

People

Romanian is spoken in Sibiu, a city shaped by its historic Saxon German community, and the villages around it keep strong traditions of shepherding, crafts and folk dress.
