About Siargao

  • Island

Where it is

Siargao is a teardrop-shaped island in the province of Surigao del Norte, off the north-eastern tip of Mindanao in the Philippines, facing the open Pacific.

History

Siargao was long a quiet island of fishing villages and coconut farms. In the 1990s surf magazines made its reef break, Cloud 9, famous, and it now hosts the annual Siargao Cup, an international surfing competition; the island was badly hit by Typhoon Odette (Rai) in 2021.

People

Siargao's islanders speak Surigaonon and Cebuano as well as Filipino and English, and fishing and coconut farming remain the backbone of village life. Many young locals have taken up surfing, and the island's surf culture now mixes with that of visitors from around the world.
