Where it is

San Pedro is the town on Ambergris Caye, the largest island of Belize, off the northern coast beside the barrier reef and close to the Mexican border.

History

Maya traders worked the caye's lagoons, and mestizo refugees from the Yucatán founded the town in the mid-nineteenth century as a fishing village. Coconut plantations and lobster fishing gave way to dive tourism in the late twentieth century, and the town grew into Belize's main resort.

People

A busy, friendly town of Belizean islanders, Mexican and North American settlers and dive guides, where Spanish, English and Kriol mix on the beach road.
