Rodney Bay is a sheltered bay and resort area at the northern end of Saint Lucia, near the town of Gros Islet, with Pigeon Island guarding its northern side.
The bay is named after the British admiral George Rodney, who used Pigeon Island as a naval base and watched the French fleet from its hilltop fort before the Battle of the Saintes in 1782. In the 1970s a causeway joined Pigeon Island to the mainland, and the bay grew into the island's main resort and yachting area.
The area's people speak English and Kwéyòl, and in the fishing town of Gros Islet locals and visitors mix at the weekly Friday-night street party of music and grilled food.
Pigeon Island was a true island until a causeway linked it to the mainland in the 1970s, creating the beaches along its edge.
