Where it is
Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand, sits at about 650 m on the southern part of the Chota Nagpur Plateau near the Tropic of Cancer, amid rolling hills, forests and waterfalls, close to the source of the Subarnarekha River.
History
The Ranchi plateau is the homeland of the Munda and Oraon peoples and was long ruled by the Nagvanshi kings of Chota Nagpur. Under the British it became the region's administrative headquarters, and Birsa Munda, leader of the Munda uprising of the 1890s, died in Ranchi jail in 1900. On 15 November 2000 Ranchi became the capital of the new state of Jharkhand.
People
Hindi is the common language and Nagpuri (Sadri) the regional one, while Adivasi communities speak Mundari, Kurukh, Kharia and Ho. Sarhul, the spring festival of the sal blossom, and Karma, the festival of the karam tree, are celebrated with dance and drums, and local food includes dhuska and rugra mushrooms.
