About Raipur
- Inland
Where it is
Raipur is the capital of Chhattisgarh, near the centre of the state's broad rice-growing plain, with the Kharun River to its west and the Mahanadi to the east; the planned capital of Nava Raipur lies to the south-east.
History
Tradition credits the city's founding to Brahmadeo Rai, a king of the Kalachuri line that ruled Chhattisgarh, in the late medieval period. The Marathas of Nagpur took the region in the 18th century, and under British rule Raipur became the chief town of Chhattisgarh within the Central Provinces. It became capital of the new state of Chhattisgarh on 1 November 2000.
People
Raipur's people speak Chhattisgarhi and Hindi, alongside Sindhi, Marwari, Odia and other communities. Festivals such as Hareli and Pola follow the farming year, and local dishes include chila, fara and bafauri.
