Where it is
Puttaparthi is a town on the Chitravathi river in Sri Sathya Sai district of Andhra Pradesh, on the dry Rayalaseema plateau about 150 km north of Bengaluru.
History
Puttaparthi was a small village when Sathya Sai Baba was born here in 1926, and his ashram, Prasanthi Nilayam, founded in 1950, turned it into a town visited by devotees from around the world. After his death in 2011 he was laid to rest in the ashram's Sai Kulwant Hall, and the town is now the headquarters of a district named after him.

Puttaparthi's people speak Telugu, with Kannada common so close to Karnataka, and the town's life centres on the ashram, its hospitals and its educational institutions. Devotees of many nationalities and faiths come for bhajans and service, especially for the birthday celebrations each November.
