Praslin is the second-largest island of the Seychelles, about 45 km north-east of Mahé in the Indian Ocean, a granite island of forested hills and beaches such as Anse Lazio and Côte d'Or.
Named after the French statesman César Gabriel de Choiseul, Duke of Praslin, the island was settled by the French in the late 18th century and long lived from coconut plantations and fishing. The Vallée de Mai, a palm forest in its hills, was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.
Praslin's people speak Seychellois Creole, English and French and live mostly in coastal villages such as Grand Anse and Baie Sainte Anne. Fishing and tourism are the main livelihoods, and small restaurants serve Creole grilled fish, breadfruit and coconut curries.
The coco de mer palm grows wild only on Praslin and neighbouring Curieuse, and it produces the largest seed in the plant kingdom.
