Piran is an old fishing town on a narrow peninsula on the Adriatic coast of Slovenia, near the borders with Italy and Croatia.
Piran was ruled by the Republic of Venice from the 13th century until 1797, and its houses, squares and bell tower still show Venetian style. Salt from the nearby pans was a key source of wealth. The composer and violinist Giuseppe Tartini was born here in 1692, and the main square bears his name.
Piran's people speak Slovene, and the area is officially bilingual, with an Italian community that keeps its language and traditions alive.
At the Sečovlje salt pans salt is still harvested by hand using methods that go back many centuries.
