Pereybère is a small seaside town on the far north coast of Mauritius, just north of Grand Baie, with a public beach in a sheltered cove facing the islands off the northern tip.
The north coast was settled under the French and British as sugar and fishing country, and Pereybère stayed a quiet village until the late 20th century, when holiday homes and small hotels grew up around its cove next to busier Grand Baie.
Pereybère's people speak Mauritian Creole, with French and English widely used, and its beach is a favourite of Mauritian families and young people on weekends and holidays.
The wedge-shaped island of Coin de Mire, seen from the beach, is a nature reserve and a nesting site for tropical seabirds.
