Pattaya is a city in Chonburi province on the east coast of the Gulf of Thailand, about 150 km south-east of Bangkok.
Pattaya was a fishing village until the 1960s, when American servicemen began visiting on leave during the Vietnam War; it then grew quickly into one of Thailand's busiest beach resorts.
Pattaya's people speak Thai, and the city draws workers from across Thailand and residents from many countries, giving it a busy, international character.
The Sanctuary of Truth in Pattaya is built entirely of wood and has been under construction since 1981.
