Yes — book timed tickets, and wear walking shoes.
May to October, when the roads and paths are clear.
The castle tour, Hohenschwangau Castle and the Marienbrücke viewpoint, plus Füssen. For a walk, try the Alpsee's lakeside loop.
About 2 hours by road from Munich (MUC). Refuel with Bavarian roasts when you arrive.
Neuschwanstein Castle stands on a rugged hill above the Pöllat gorge and the village of Hohenschwangau, near Füssen in the Swabia region of south-west Bavaria, Germany, where the Alps rise close to the Austrian border.
King Ludwig II of Bavaria commissioned the castle as a retreat and a tribute to the composer Richard Wagner, and its foundation stone was laid in 1869. When Ludwig died in 1886 it was far from complete, and within weeks it was opened to paying visitors; in 2025 it became part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site with his other palaces.
Around Füssen and Schwangau people speak German with the Swabian dialects of the Allgäu, where dairy farming shapes the countryside and cheese and Käsespätzle are local favourites. Füssen has a long tradition of making lutes and violins.
Neuschwanstein served as an inspiration for Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland and for Cinderella Castle at Walt Disney World.
