About Negril

  • Coastal

Where it is

Negril is a resort town at the western tip of Jamaica, stretching between Westmoreland and Hanover parishes, with a long beach to the north and limestone cliffs to the south.

History

For centuries Negril was a remote fishing village surrounded by wetlands, with little more than a coastal track to link it to the rest of the island. After a road was built in the mid 20th century, travellers began arriving in the late 1960s and 1970s, and the village grew into one of Jamaica's main beach resorts.

People

Negril's residents speak English and Jamaican Patois, and many work in small guesthouses, boat trips and beach trades, giving the town a laid-back pace.
