Where it is

Nanded is a city on the Godavari river in the Marathwada region of Maharashtra, on the Deccan plateau near the Telangana border, and the headquarters of Nanded district.

History

Held over the centuries by Deccan dynasties such as the Satavahanas and Rashtrakutas and later by the Mughals and the Nizams of Hyderabad, Nanded became a great Sikh centre in 1708, when Guru Gobind Singh died here after naming the Guru Granth Sahib as the eternal Guru. The Takht Sachkhand Sri Hazur Sahib was raised at the site in the 1830s with the patronage of Maharaja Ranjit Singh.

People

Nanded speaks Marathi alongside Dakhni Urdu, Hindi and Punjabi, reflecting its Nizam-era past and a long-settled Sikh community whose families trace their roots to the followers of Guru Gobind Singh. Gurudwara langars serve pilgrims throughout the day.
