Mussoorie is a hill station in the Dehradun district of Uttarakhand, strung along a ridge of the Garhwal Himalayan foothills at about 2,000 m, above the Doon Valley and facing the snow peaks to the north-east.
Mussoorie began in the 1820s, when Captain Frederick Young and the revenue official F. J. Shore built a shooting lodge on the ridge, and it grew into one of the favourite summer retreats of the British in India, with hotels, churches and boarding schools.
Mussoorie's people speak Garhwali and Hindi, and the town has a long-established Tibetan community in Happy Valley and many boarding schools founded in the colonial era. Tourism and schooling are its main livelihoods.
Sir George Everest, after whom the world's highest mountain is named, lived and worked at Park Estate near Mussoorie while he was Surveyor General of India.
