The Turning Torso, Malmöhus Castle and the castle parks, Lilla Torg and the Öresund Bridge. For something different, visit Ribersborg's cold-bath house.
Falafel is a Malmö staple, alongside Skåne cooking.
Malmö is Sweden's third-largest city, in the southern province of Skåne on the Öresund strait, linked to Copenhagen in Denmark by the Öresund Bridge.
In the 15th century Malmö was one of Denmark's largest towns, rich from the herring fishery, and it passed to Sweden with the rest of Skåne under the Treaty of Roskilde in 1658. The Kockums shipyard made it an industrial city in the 19th and 20th centuries, and since the late 1990s it has reinvented itself with a new university on the old docks and the Öresund Bridge to Copenhagen, opened in 2000.
Malmö's people speak Swedish, often with the accent of Skåne, and the city is one of the most international in Sweden, with residents of nearly 180 nationalities. Many commute across the bridge to Copenhagen, and Skåne's food traditions include spettekaka, a tall cake baked on a spit.
The Turning Torso, completed in 2005, twists through a quarter turn from its base to its top and was the tallest building in Scandinavia when it opened.
