Where it is
Loni is a fast-growing town in the Ghaziabad district of Uttar Pradesh, on the north-eastern edge of Delhi near the Yamuna River, within the National Capital Region.
History
Loni's name is said to come from lon, the Hindi word for salt. At the end of the 14th century Timur's army attacked the town and its fort shortly before defeating the Tughlaq sultan at Delhi, and under the Mughals Loni was a pargana of the Delhi region with a brick fort. In recent decades it has grown rapidly as a suburb of Delhi.
People
Hindi is the main language, with Urdu also spoken. Many residents commute to work in Delhi, and newer colonies have grown up around the older villages of the Yamuna plain.
