Ljubljana is the capital of Slovenia, set on the Ljubljanica River in the centre of the country between the Alps and the Karst.
The Romans built the town of Emona here, and the medieval town grew below the castle hill under Habsburg rule. After an earthquake in 1895 much of the city was rebuilt, and in the 20th century the architect Jože Plečnik shaped its bridges, squares and riverbanks. It became the capital of independent Slovenia in 1991.
Ljubljana's people speak Slovene, a South Slavic language, and the city is known for its student life, cycling, open-air markets and riverside café culture.
The dragon is the symbol of Ljubljana, and four dragon statues guard the Dragon Bridge over the Ljubljanica.
