About Livingstone

  • Riverside

Where it is

Livingstone is a town in the Southern Province of Zambia, on the north bank of the Zambezi River a few kilometres upstream of Victoria Falls, on the border with Zimbabwe.

History

Named after the Scottish explorer who reached the falls in the mid-nineteenth century, Livingstone was founded in the early twentieth century and served as the capital of Northern Rhodesia before Lusaka. The railway and the bridge over the gorge made it the gateway to the falls, and tourism has shaped the town ever since.

People

A relaxed, friendly town of Tonga, Lozi and many other Zambian peoples where most livelihoods are tied to the falls; guides, craft sellers and lodge staff greet visitors in English and Nyanja.

Known for

  • Victoria Falls from the Zambian side
  • Devil's Pool on the lip of the falls
  • Zambezi sunset cruises
  • Rafting the Batoka Gorge

Did you know?

Mosi-oa-Tunya, the local name for the falls, means the smoke that thunders, for the column of spray seen from far away.
