Hiking shoes, swimwear
The 'underwater waterfall' illusion off the peninsula, seen from a flight
May to December, when the kitesurfing winds blow.
Yes, hiking Le Morne Brabant is one of the things to do here. Wear hiking shoes, and pack swimwear for Le Morne beach afterwards.
An illusion off the peninsula that you see from a flight. It's the hidden gem here.
The International Slave Route Monument and the lagoon. For a meal, head to La Gaulette for seafood.
Le Morne is a peninsula at the south-western tip of Mauritius, in the Black River district, where the basalt mountain of Le Morne Brabant, about 556 m high, rises above a wide turquoise lagoon.
In the 18th and early 19th centuries enslaved people who escaped from plantations, known as maroons, took refuge in the caves and on the summit of Le Morne Brabant. The mountain became a symbol of resistance to slavery, and in 2008 the Le Morne Cultural Landscape was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The nearby villages, such as La Gaulette, are home to Creole families of African and Malagasy descent who speak Mauritian Creole and have long fished the lagoon. Sega, the music and dance born among enslaved Africans in Mauritius, is performed here and is recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Seen from the air, sand and silt sliding off the underwater shelf near Le Morne create the illusion of a waterfall plunging into the deep ocean.
