Landour is a small cantonment town in the Dehradun district of Uttarakhand, on the higher ridge just above Mussoorie, among oak and deodar forest with views of the Garhwal Himalaya.
Landour was established by the British in the 1820s as a convalescent depot for soldiers, and it remains a cantonment. Missionaries, schools and writers later settled among its cottages, and strict limits on building have kept its old houses, churches and lanes much as they were.
Landour is a small community of long-time residents, writers, teachers and soldiers, with Hindi, Garhwali and English spoken. Its few shops are known for locally made peanut butter.
Kellogg Memorial Church in Landour houses the Landour Language School, where missionaries and many other students have studied Hindi for more than a century.
