Where it is
Kukke Subramanya is a temple village on the Kumaradhara river in Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka, in the rainforest of the Western Ghats at the foot of Kumara Parvatha, east of Mangaluru.
History
The temple honours Subrahmanya, or Murugan, worshipped here as lord of the serpents, and legend says the serpent king Vasuki took refuge here from Garuda. It is widely known for rites that atone for harm done to snakes, drawing families from across South India.
People
Kukke Subramanya's people speak Kannada and Tulu, and the surrounding villages grow areca nut, coconut and rubber on the forested slopes. Families come to perform serpent rites, and trekkers set out from the village to climb Kumara Parvatha.
