About Krabi

  • Coastal

Where it is

Krabi is a province on the Andaman Sea coast of southern Thailand, where limestone cliffs rise from mangroves and bays around Krabi Town, Ao Nang and the Railay peninsula, with dozens of islands offshore.

History

Caves around Krabi hold prehistoric rock paintings and some of the earliest traces of people in Thailand, and a bronze seal engraved with a two-masted ship, found at Khuan Luk Pat, has been dated to the 2nd century AD. Long a quiet district of fishing villages and, later, rubber and oil-palm plantations, Krabi has become one of Thailand's principal tourist destinations, drawing climbers from around the world to Railay's cliffs.

People

Krabi's people speak Southern Thai, and the province is home to both Thai Buddhist and Thai Muslim communities, with Urak Lawoi sea people on islands such as Koh Lanta. Fishing, rubber and oil palm support many families, and Southern Thai curries such as kaeng tai pla are local staples.

Known for

  • Rock climbing on Railay's limestone cliffs
  • Ao Nang and Phra Nang beaches
  • Island-hopping to Hong and Poda islands
  • Tiger Cave Temple (Wat Tham Suea)
  • Kayaking through the mangroves

Did you know?

Krabi is the word for an ancient Siamese sword, and the provincial seal shows two crossed swords in front of the Indian Ocean and the mountain of Khao Phanom Bencha.
