Khiva lies in the Khorezm region of western Uzbekistan, near the Amu Darya river and between the Karakum and Kyzylkum deserts.
Khiva was an oasis town on the caravan routes and became the capital of the Khanate of Khiva from the 16th century. In the 19th century it became a Russian protectorate. Its inner walled city, Itchan Kala, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1990.
Uzbek is spoken in Khiva, and the Khorezm region has its own dialect, dances and dishes, with many families running small workshops and guesthouses inside the old city.
The Juma Mosque in Khiva has a roof held up by more than 200 carved wooden columns.
