Kazbegi, officially Stepantsminda, is a mountain town in north-east Georgia on the Georgian Military Road, below Mount Kazbek in the Greater Caucasus.
The town takes its official name from a monk named Stephen who is said to have lived here. Gergeti Trinity Church was built on the hill above in the 14th century. In the 19th century the Russian Empire improved the Georgian Military Road through the valley, and in the Soviet era the town was named Kazbegi after the writer Alexander Kazbegi, who was born here.
Kazbegi's people are Mokheve highlanders who speak Georgian, raise sheep and cattle on the high pastures and keep old mountain customs alive.
In Georgian legend the hero Amirani, a figure much like Prometheus, was chained to a rock on Mount Kazbek as punishment.
