Kekova's sunken city by kayak
May to October, the season. Bring snorkel gear.
Dive, walk part of the Lycian Way, swim at Kaputaş beach and see the Antiphellos theatre.
By kayak — sea kayaking to Kekova is the hidden gem of a stay in Kaş.
Fly into Dalaman (DLM) or Antalya (AYT), about 2.5 to 3 h away. End your first evening with meze on the harbour.
Kaş is a small harbour town in Antalya Province on the Lycian coast of south-western Türkiye, on the Mediterranean facing the Greek island of Kastellorizo, with steep mountains rising close behind it.
Kaş stands on the site of Antiphellos, a Lycian port whose Hellenistic theatre still faces the sea, and Lycian sarcophagi and rock tombs dot the town. Known under the Ottomans as Andifli, it remained a quiet fishing and trading town until diving, sailing and the Lycian Way walking route brought visitors from the late 20th century.
Kaş's people speak Turkish and once lived from fishing, farming and trade with the nearby Greek islands; today tourism, diving and boat trips sustain the town, while hill villages grow olives and keep goats.
The sunken ruins at Kekova, east of Kaş, were partly submerged by an earthquake in the 2nd century, and walls and stairways can still be seen through the clear water from boats and kayaks.
