Where it is
Jalgaon is the largest city of the Khandesh region of northern Maharashtra, south of the Tapi River and the Satpura range, and a common base for visiting the Ajanta Caves to the south.
History
Jalgaon lies in Khandesh, ruled from the late 14th century by the Faruqi sultans and later by the Mughals and the Marathas, before it passed to the British in the early 19th century. The region's black cotton soil made the town a trading centre for cotton, and later for bananas.
People
Marathi is the official language, and many people speak Ahirani, the Khandeshi dialect, with Hindi and Urdu also common. Farming of bananas, cotton and pulses, and the trade in them, are the main livelihoods.
Known for
- Banana plantations
- Khandeshi food, especially vangyache bharit
