Where it is
Jalandhar is a city in the Doaba region of Punjab, the fertile plain between the Beas and Sutlej rivers, on the historic Grand Trunk Road.
History
Jalandhar is one of Punjab's oldest cities, said to have been the capital of the ancient Trigarta kingdom. It was ruled in turn by the Delhi sultans, the Mughals and the Sikh kingdom before the British took the Jalandhar Doab in the 1840s and made the city a divisional headquarters. After Partition in 1947, craftsmen from Sialkot settled here and built it into a leading centre of sports goods.
People
Punjabi is the main language, spoken in its Doabi form, and Hindi is also common. The Doaba region has long sent emigrants to Britain, Canada and beyond, and Lohri, Baisakhi and the Sikh Gurpurabs are widely celebrated.
