Honolulu is the capital and largest city of the US state of Hawaii, United States, on the south shore of the island of Oahu in the Pacific Ocean.
Honolulu was the seat of the Kingdom of Hawaii in the 19th century, whose Iolani Palace still stands. After the kingdom was overthrown in 1893, Hawaii was annexed by the United States; the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 brought the US into the Second World War.
Honolulu's people come from many backgrounds, Native Hawaiian, Asian, Pacific Islander and others, and Hawaiian words, local pidgin and the spirit of aloha are part of daily life.
Iolani Palace in Honolulu is the only royal palace in the United States.
