Swimwear, reef-safe sunscreen
Pereybere's small public beach
May to December, when it's cooler and drier. Pack swimwear and reef-safe sunscreen.
About 1 hour by road from Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International (MRU).
Take a catamaran trip to the northern islets, go snorkelling and browse the Sunday market. Cap Malheureux's red-roofed church, the Pamplemousses garden and Pereybere's small public beach all make good outings.
Dholl puri and seafood curry.
Grand Baie is a resort town on a sheltered bay on the north coast of Mauritius, north of Port Louis, with the small islands of Coin de Mire, Flat Island and Gabriel Island offshore.
Like the rest of Mauritius, the bay was known to Dutch sailors in the 17th century and later lay within French and then British Mauritius. A fishing village for most of its history, Grand Baie grew in the late 20th century into a busy resort town.
Grand Baie's people speak Mauritian Creole, with French and English widely used, and the town draws Mauritians of Indian, African, Chinese and European descent to its beaches at weekends. Fishing boats still work the bay alongside the pleasure craft.
