About Gozo

  • Island
  • Hills

Where it is

Gozo is the second largest island of Malta, lying north-west of the main island and reached by a short ferry crossing from Ċirkewwa.

History

Gozo has been settled since prehistoric times, and its Ġgantija temples date to the 4th millennium BC. The island was repeatedly raided in the Middle Ages, and the walled Cittadella at Victoria gave its people refuge. The famous Azure Window rock arch at Dwejra collapsed into the sea in 2017.

People

Gozitans speak Maltese with their own local accents, and the island keeps a slower, rural pace, with farming, fishing and village festas at the centre of community life.

Known for

  • Ġgantija temples
  • Red sand at Ramla Bay
  • Diving at Dwejra
  • Rural villages and farmland

Did you know?

The Ġgantija temples on Gozo are among the oldest free-standing stone buildings in the world, older than the pyramids of Egypt.
