This part of the Gobi Desert lies in the Ömnögovi province of southern Mongolia, around the town of Dalanzadgad and the Gurvan Saikhan mountains.
The Gobi has long been home to nomadic herders who raise camels, goats and sheep. In the 1920s American expeditions found the first scientifically recognised dinosaur eggs at the Flaming Cliffs of Bayanzag. Gobi Gurvansaikhan National Park protects mountains, dunes and canyons in the region.
Herding families in the Gobi speak Mongolian and live in gers, moving with their camels, goats and sheep between seasonal pastures.
In Yolyn Am, a narrow gorge in the Gurvan Saikhan mountains, thick ice often survives well into summer.
