November to February is the sweet spot — dry, breezy and beach-perfect. The sea is calm, the shacks are all open, and the evenings are warm enough to stay out late.
Fly into Dabolim, about 30 km from Panaji, or take the train to Madgaon Jn, Goa's main station. By road it is around 590 km from Mumbai, and the rail route down the Konkan coast is the scenic way to arrive.
Light cottons, sunscreen and flip-flops cover most of it. Add a scarf — you will want your shoulders covered for the churches.
Butterfly Beach near Palolem, which you can only reach by boat or by a forest trail. It rewards the effort.
Gunpowder in Assagao, Britto's at Baga for the beachfront version, and Vinayak Family Restaurant in Assolna if you want the unhurried local one.
Goa is India's smallest state by area, on the Konkan coast of the Arabian Sea between Maharashtra and Karnataka, with the forested Western Ghats rising along its eastern edge.
Ruled for centuries by Indian dynasties such as the Kadambas and later by the Bijapur Sultanate, Goa was taken by the Portuguese in 1510 and governed from Lisbon for about 450 years. India annexed it in 1961, and it became a full state in 1987.
Goans speak Konkani, the state's official language, and Marathi, English and Hindi are widely understood. Hindu temples and Catholic churches stand side by side, and each village keeps its own feast days.
The Basilica of Bom Jesus in Old Goa holds the remains of St Francis Xavier, and the churches and convents of Old Goa are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
