Where it is
Gangasagar is on Sagar Island in the South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, at the southern tip where the Hooghly, a distributary of the Ganga, meets the Bay of Bengal, on the western edge of the Sundarbans delta.
History
Legend says the sage Kapila had his hermitage here, where he reduced to ash the sixty thousand sons of King Sagara, who were freed only when their descendant Bhagiratha brought the Ganga down to the sea. The Kapil Muni temple marks the spot, and the Gangasagar Mela on Makar Sankranti has grown into one of India's largest bathing festivals.
People
Sagar Island's villagers speak Bengali and live by farming rice and fishing, and increasingly from the pilgrim trade, in a landscape of creeks and embankments. During the mela, sadhus and pilgrims from across India camp near the beach alongside local traders.
