Where it is
Gandhinagar is the capital of Gujarat, a planned city on the west bank of the Sabarmati River just north of Ahmedabad.
History
After Gujarat was separated from Bombay State in 1960, a new capital was planned to replace Ahmedabad and named after Mahatma Gandhi. It was designed by the town planners H. K. Mewada and Prakash Apte, who had trained under Le Corbusier in Chandigarh, and was built during the 1960s; the state capital moved here from Ahmedabad in 1970.
People
Gandhinagar's residents, many of them in government service, speak Gujarati, with Hindi and English widely used. Navratri garba and the Uttarayan kite festival in January are the high points of the city's year.
