Exuma is a district of the Bahamas made up of Great and Little Exuma and a chain of more than 300 cays stretching north-west across shallow turquoise water.
The islands were home to the Lucayan people before European contact. After the American Revolution, Loyalists brought cotton plantations to the Exumas in the late 18th century, which failed within a few decades. In 1958 the northern cays became the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park, one of the earliest protected areas of its kind.
Exuma's people speak English and Bahamian Creole and live in small settlements around George Town, fishing and sailing, with boat races at the regatta each April.
The Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park, created in 1958, is often described as the first marine park of its kind in the world.
