Where it is

Everest Base Camp lies at more than 5,300 m on the Khumbu Glacier in Sagarmatha National Park, in the Solukhumbu district of north-eastern Nepal, at the foot of Mount Everest on the border with China.

History

Nepal opened its borders to foreign climbers around 1950, and in 1953 Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary made the first ascent of Everest from a base camp here, by a route through the Khumbu Icefall. Sagarmatha National Park was created in 1976 and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979, and the trek to base camp has become one of the best-known walks in the world.

People

The Khumbu is the homeland of the Sherpa, Tibetan Buddhist people whose ancestors crossed from Tibet several centuries ago and who speak the Sherpa language as well as Nepali. Many Sherpas work as mountaineering guides and high-altitude climbers, and Mani Rimdu, held at Tengboche Monastery in October or November, is the most important Sherpa festival.
