Durmitor is a limestone mountain massif in northern Montenegro, with the small town of Žabljak as the main base for visitors.
The area's glacial lakes, forests and canyons were protected as a national park in the mid-20th century, and the park was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1980. The Đurđevića Tara Bridge over the canyon was completed shortly before the Second World War and was partly destroyed during the war, then rebuilt.
Žabljak is a small mountain town where Montenegrin is spoken, and families in the surrounding villages have long kept sheep and cattle, moving them to high pastures in summer.
The Tara River Canyon is one of the deepest canyons in Europe.
