About Delhi

  • Riverside

Where it is

Delhi, India's National Capital Territory, contains New Delhi, the national capital, and lies on the Yamuna river between Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, where the last spur of the Aravalli range ends in the Delhi Ridge.

History

Delhi has been a seat of power for about a thousand years, from the Tomar and Chauhan Rajputs through the Delhi Sultanate to the Mughals, whose emperor Shah Jahan built the walled city of Shahjahanabad in the 17th century. The British moved their capital here from Calcutta in 1911 and built New Delhi, which became the capital of independent India in 1947.

People

Delhi's people speak Hindi above all, with Punjabi, Urdu and English widely used, and families from every part of India have made the city home. Its food ranges from Old Delhi's Mughlai kebabs and chaat to Punjabi dhabas, and Diwali, Eid and Gurpurab are all celebrated across the city.
