Da Nang is a port city on the central coast of Vietnam, spread around the mouth of the Han River and a sheltered bay between the Son Tra Peninsula and the Hai Van Pass, with long sandy beaches running south towards Hoi An.
The coast around Da Nang belonged to the Cham kingdom of Champa for centuries, and the city's Museum of Cham Sculpture holds the largest collection of Cham art. Known to the French as Tourane, the port was the first target of the Franco-Spanish attack of 1858 that began French colonial rule, and in the 20th century it grew into one of Vietnam's largest cities.
Da Nang's people speak Vietnamese with a central accent, and fishing, shipping and tourism are the city's livelihoods, with round basket boats (thung chai) still used along the coast. Local dishes include mi Quang noodles and banh trang cuon thit heo, rice paper rolled with pork.
The forests of the Son Tra Peninsula, on the edge of the city, shelter the critically endangered red-shanked douc, a strikingly coloured monkey.
