Coloane is the southernmost part of Macau, a hilly, green former island south of Cotai.
Coloane was long a fishing and boat-building area and a refuge for pirates. In 1910 Portuguese forces fought a battle with pirates there, often called one of the last such battles on the China coast. The island stayed rural for much of the 20th century and remains the quietest part of Macau.
Cantonese is spoken in Coloane, where a small village community of fishing families and shopkeepers keeps a slower pace than the rest of Macau.
Hac Sa Beach takes its name from Cantonese words meaning black sand, after the dark sand along its shore.
