Cannes is a resort city on the French Riviera in the Alpes-Maritimes department of southern France, on a bay of the Mediterranean between Nice and Saint-Tropez.
A fishing village below a medieval hilltop quarter, Cannes became a winter resort for the British and French upper classes in the 19th century. The Cannes Film Festival, first held in 1946, made its name around the world.
Cannes's residents speak French, and the city moves between the quiet life of its old quarter and markets and the busy seasons of festivals and conferences that fill its hotels.
The monks of the Abbey of Lérins, on Île Saint-Honorat off Cannes, have lived on the island for more than 1,500 years.
