Bundi is a town in the Hadoti region of south-eastern Rajasthan, tucked into a narrow valley of the Aravalli hills near the city of Kota.
Named, by tradition, after a Meena chief called Bunda, Bundi was taken by the Hada Chauhan Rajputs and became the capital of their kingdom, which gave the Hadoti region its name. The Hadas built Taragarh Fort and the palace below it, and Bundi remained a princely state until it merged into Rajasthan after independence.
Bundi's people speak Hadoti, the Rajasthani dialect of the region, along with Hindi. The town gave its name to the Bundi school of miniature painting, and the Kajli Teej festival of the monsoon is a local highlight.
Rudyard Kipling stayed at the Sukh Mahal pavilion on Jait Sagar lake when he visited Bundi in the late 19th century.
