June to September — hot, sunny beach weather. What to pack: Swimwear, sunscreen, light evening clothes.
Fly into Tivat Airport (TIV), ~20 km by road.
Beach days, swimming, boat trips along the Budva Riviera, evening walks in the old town. A quieter find: The quiet coves of Przno, a small fishing village a short way down the coast.
Grilled fish, octopus salad, black risotto, Njeguši ham with local cheese.
Budva lies on the Adriatic coast of Montenegro, at the centre of a stretch of beaches and coves known as the Budva Riviera.
Budva is one of the oldest settlements on the eastern Adriatic, with roots in the ancient Greek and Roman world. Like much of this coast it was ruled by Venice for several centuries, and its walled old town took its present shape in that period. The town was heavily damaged by the 1979 earthquake and later restored, while tourism grew strongly from the late 20th century.
Montenegrin is spoken in Budva, and in summer the town fills with visitors from across Europe, while the old town keeps its narrow streets, small churches and cafes.
Sveti Stefan, just south of Budva, was a fortified fishing village on an islet that was turned into a hotel resort in the mid-20th century.
